If this whole ebola ordeal has taught us anything, it’s that people are inherently stupid. Really, really, really stupid.
Take the CDC’s lack of leadership (and, clearly, brain capacity) when it came to dealing with ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas: No one enforced protocol that made certain healthcare workers were properly suited up when treating the patient; no one thought twice about disposing of hazardous materials, which piled up in hallways; and no one, it seems, gave a shit about anything, which is surprising, considering the United States is a First World Country.
The irony here practically writes itself: In West Africa, medical staff are meticulous and professional, displaying First World quality medical care in the Third World. In America, judging by recent events, we are displaying Third World quality care in the First World.
The stupidity of the dummies at Presbyterian trumps the ineptitude of the CDC. These were the idiots who sent Duncan home (where he languished for 4 days before returning in an ambulance) knowing that he was from West Africa and knowing he had a high fever, in addition to other alarming symptoms.
To say Presbyterian dropped the ball would be an understatement. They didn’t just drop the ball, they took a huge shit on it and then threw it in everyone’s faces. In addition to Duncan dying, two nurses contracted the virus (one of whom willingly got on a plane [ala Duncan] shortly after Duncan’s passing, proving that stupidity is much more infectious than ebola could ever be).
Thanks to Fox News and other fear mongering news outlets, many Americans are now in full blown ebola panic. But if you know anything about ebola and know how hard it is to contract, you’d know this fear is totally misplaced and irrational.
Only two people — a pair of nurses who treated Duncan at Presbyterian — are confirmed to have contracted ebola in the United States during this current outbreak (Duncan contracted it in West Africa).
Will there be more cases? Most likely. But the chance of an all out uncontrollable outbreak taking place in America is close to zero. It’s not ebola that we should be worried about. It’s the stupid people around ebola that pose the greatest threat.
